The soft ceiling the crater sum is folded through.
Craters overlap, and a saturated surface has three or four of them on top of
each other everywhere. Summed unbounded, a basin inside a basin inside a
basin goes through the mantle. A hard clamp would flatten exactly the deepest
and most interesting ground into a plateau, so this is tanh: identity to
within a few percent below half the budget, asymptotic to it above, smooth
everywhere.
