What the field measures, so that a claim about it can be checked.

The volume is the sum of the spherical wedges under each cell, which for a star-shaped surface is exact in the limit and converges from below. It is the number the ingest compares against the source mesh's own volume: a radius grid that lost a concavity has too much volume, and one sampled too coarsely has too little, so a two-sided tolerance catches both.
