(1 - |n|)² per octave, which is the fold that turns a smooth maximum into a
crest. The derivative follows through the fold: d/dp (1-|n|)² = -2(1-|n|)·sign(n)·∇n, so a ridge line reports the slope of the face it is on
rather than the slope of the noise underneath it.
