Hypsometry: continents against ocean floor.

A plate is continental or oceanic, and that one bit is what gives Earth its bimodal elevation histogram — means near +0.8 km and −3.7 km with very little ground in between. The blend across a boundary is what stops it being a step: F2 − F1 is zero exactly on the boundary and grows inward, so the two plates' bases mix over a margin instead of meeting at a cliff.

A stagnant-lid world has one plate and takes the null branch, which is the swell alone — unimodal, which is Mercury.
